Maria Shriver Reflects on Her Connection with Eric Dane

Maria Shriver, a well-known figure in the publishing industry, recently shared her heartfelt connection with the late Eric Dane. In a tribute published in her Sunday Paper on February 22, Shriver expressed her admiration for Dane’s bravery in openly sharing his ALS diagnosis with the world. She highlighted his advocacy for increased research and his efforts to raise awareness about the devastating neurological disease.

Shriver revealed that Dane had chosen her Penguin Random House publishing imprint, The Open Field, to publish his memoir titled “Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” which was set to be released in 2026. She recalled engaging in ongoing conversations with Dane about the project until his untimely passing on February 19.

“He wrote it so that his family had something to be proud of,” Shriver shared. She mentioned that Dane had expressed his desire to share his story with the world through his book, aiming to leave a lasting impact.

Dane’s memoir, according to Shriver, invites readers to reflect on the significance of each moment in their lives amidst the chaos of everyday life. The book aims to inspire readers to celebrate the moments that matter the most and find meaning in their own experiences.

In a statement to People in December 2025, Dane reflected on his motivation for writing the book, stating, “I want to capture the moments that shaped me — the beautiful days, the hard ones, the ones I never took for granted — so that if nothing else, people who read it will remember what it means to live with heart.”

Following Dane’s passing, his family confirmed that the actor had spent his final days surrounded by loved ones, including his wife Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The family expressed their gratitude for the support and love they had received during this difficult time.

In honor of Dane, a GoFundMe page has been launched to support his family, with donations pouring in from celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Brad Falchuk. The page aims to provide stability for Dane’s daughters and offer assistance during this challenging period.

As the world mourns the loss of Eric Dane, his legacy lives on through his memoir and the impact he made as a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research. His story serves as a reminder to cherish each day and find meaning in the moments that shape our lives.
