The U.S. economy is currently experiencing some challenges, according to Megan Horneman, the Chief Investment Officer at Verdence Capital Advisors. With $4.1 billion in assets under management, Horneman is concerned about the market’s complacency surrounding the upcoming Aug. 1 U.S. trade deadline.

Horneman believes that the market is too optimistic and is pricing in a perfect scenario. She highlights potential issues such as tariff concerns, uncertainty regarding Federal Reserve policy, and overbought conditions from a technical perspective. As a former senior investment strategist at Deutsche Bank, she warns that a correction in valuations could occur if rate cuts are taken off the table and uncertainty around tariffs persists.

One of Horneman’s main worries is the overbought conditions in growth stocks, particularly in the Big Tech sector. She believes that these technical levels could disrupt the current market rally.

Despite her short-term caution, Horneman remains a long-term bull and sees market pullbacks as opportunities for investors. She recommends international stocks as top plays during market weakness, emphasizing their relative cheapness compared to U.S. stocks.

In navigating the current uncertainty, Horneman advises investors to ensure they are appropriately allocated. She suggests that market rotations may continue, particularly with international stocks gaining more attention.

Guy Adami, a trader on CNBC’s “Fast Money,” also expresses concerns about market valuation, noting that retail investors have been a driving force behind recent market gains. The S&P 500 closed at record highs every day last week, with a 16% increase over the past three months, while the Nasdaq has seen a 21% increase over the same period.

In conclusion, while the market is trading at record highs, experts like Horneman and Adami caution investors to be mindful of potential risks and to ensure proper allocation in their portfolios. As uncertainties loom around trade deadlines and Federal Reserve policies, staying informed and vigilant is crucial in navigating the current market environment.
