Season 20 of “Married at First Sight” offers a fresh experience for long-time fans. Debuting on July 12, this season marks the first complete series produced for Peacock.
Produced by Kinetic Content, the show transitioned from Lifetime, where it aired Seasons 5 through 18, to NBC’s streaming platform in its 19th season. However, the deal to move was finalized only after the filming of Season 19.
“Season 19 was originally created with Lifetime in mind. We adapted it for Peacock, but the filming was initially intended for Lifetime,” explains Chris Coelen, founder and CEO of Kinetic. “This season is our first fully crafted for Peacock.”
The team anticipated a significant transformation for Season 20. Coelen acknowledges the valuable long-term collaboration with A&E, who “took the initial risk on the series.” Yet, due to shifting industry dynamics, a change was necessary, offering more flexibility without network TV constraints.
A notable change for fans is the introduction of new experts. Following Season 19, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Pastor Cal Roberson, and Dr. Pia Holec departed, making way for Paul C. Brunson and Dr. Lisa Paz to guide the couples.
“Each season prompts discussions about what succeeds and what doesn’t. Our experts have been with us for a long time, and the chance to introduce two exciting new experts arose,” the executive producer notes. “Transitioning to a new platform was an ideal moment to bring fresh perspectives, and we’re thrilled with the new team members.”
Traditionally, the show featured three or four experts, but this season’s format with two experts is intentional. “It feels less crowded and allows the experts to form deeper connections with participants,” he explains.
Set in Seattle, this season also showcases slightly older couples, possibly more prepared for marriage.
“Readiness for a major commitment varies by location,” Coelen observes. “The participants this season appear at the right stage in life for serious relationships.”
For the first time, “Married at First Sight” features a familiar face from reality TV. Nick Uhlenhuth, known from Netflix’s “The Circle” and “Perfect Match,” joins the show. Initially, Coelen questioned his motives, ensuring his goal was genuine connection over fame. Fortunately, he formed a real bond with Courteney Landis.
“Their alignment is based on shared values,” Coelen comments. “While we hadn’t planned to recruit from other shows, his family background and relationships made him a great fit.”
The first episode of “Married at First Sight” Season 20 is now available on Peacock.
