Authorities have reported that a person dressed in camouflage and wearing a mask has been involved in multiple acts of vandalism at the Polish consulate in Manhattan. This individual, seen using a portable PA system to rant, has targeted the historic site on more than one occasion.
Police have released images of the suspect, described as a fashion-challenged vandal wearing gloves. They stated that the initial act of vandalism occurred at the 125-year-old De Lamar Mansion in Murray Hill, home to the consulate, around 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
The person spray-painted the word “terror” in black on a sign honoring Polish women before fleeing the scene, as indicated by police reports and photos.
The same individual returned early Friday morning to deface the consulate once more, police stated.
Photos uploaded on the platform X illustrate the aftermath, with the consulate’s door and a bronze statue of Polish WWII hero Jan Karski covered in red spray paint. View the images here.
Other plaques and signs celebrating Polish heroes and the historic mansion were also defaced, as shown in the pictures.
By Sunday morning, traces of red spray paint were still visible on the building’s facade.
During the second incident at the consulate, the vandal was observed using a portable PA system to deliver a rant.
The NYPD has released photos of the suspect, showing him wearing a green balaclava, a black jacket, and red gloves.
Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
