Matias Karsikas is an artist based in Helsinki whose work revolves around the central principle of listening to the material. His sculptures combine elements of glass, wood, and ceramics to reflect nature’s resilience despite human intervention.

The botanical sculptures created by Karsikas exist in a realm between artificial and organic. The vibrant colors of hand-blown glass form symmetrical petals, while bits of fired clay protrude rhythmically like disc florets. Untreated wood fragments provide a stark contrast, challenging the balance between natural components of flora and their fabricated representations.

Karsikas draws inspiration from nature’s textures and surfaces rather than directly depicting figures or landscapes. His intricate finishes, such as the mottled green hues resembling lichen and moss in pieces like “Jäkälä” and “Sammal,” are achieved through his own glaze formulations.

One of Karsikas’ notable public works is “Peukaloisen puutarha” (Little Thumbling’s Garden), displayed on a Helsinki daycare center wall. This installation features embellished flowers, a berry cluster, and peas, playing with scale to evoke childhood memories of a time when everything seemed larger, more magical, and exciting.

Following his successful exhibition at the Finnish Glass Museum, Karsikas is currently working on two upcoming public artworks. For updates on his latest projects, you can follow him on Instagram and visit his website for more of his work.

The intricate and detailed botanical sculptures crafted by Karsikas showcase his unique approach to blending natural elements with artistic interpretation. Each piece reflects his deep connection to nature and the beauty found in its textures and surfaces. Through his innovative use of materials and meticulous craftsmanship, Karsikas invites viewers to explore the intersection between the artificial and the organic in his captivating creations.
