The founder of Oak National Academy is set to lead a new initiative within the Department of Health and Social Care, aimed at reducing hospital wait times and enhancing patient access to general practitioners.
Matt Hood, the individual behind the establishment of Oak National Academy, has been appointed to spearhead a new “delivery unit” within the Department of Health and Social Care, with the imperative goal of significantly decreasing hospital wait times and enhancing access to general practitioners.
According to information from Schools Week, Matt Hood has received a senior advisory role under health secretary Wes Streeting.
This new “delivery unit” will focus on “monitoring and challenging” the progress towards critical goals, including the urgent reduction of hospital wait times and increasing access to GPs.
A job posting for the role specified that the unit would maintain a “laser-like focus” on implementing necessary reforms to achieve improvements across the healthcare system, particularly regarding the top priorities identified in public surveys.
This small but specialized team will consist of a blend of internal and external experts—individuals with extensive knowledge of the healthcare landscape as well as specialists in implementing strategic and cultural changes in policy formation.
It has been noted that Hood’s position is a direct ministerial appointment, suggesting that his responsibilities will be integrated closely with the secretary of state’s office.
The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed that Streeting has outlined his ambitious plan for the transformation and delivery of services during this crucial reform period.
“Matt will collaborate with the department’s Delivery Unit to ensure that the Government and the Department fulfill their commitments, coordinate efforts across the health and care systems, and offer insights on emerging challenges,” stated a DHSC representative.
Hood, who began his paid position last month, was approached for further comments.
