Matthew McConaughey had an 'Eight-Year Hiatus' From His Own Mom, 93, After Discovering She Was 'Leaking Stories' About Him

Matthew McConaughey faced a tumultuous decade-long strain in his relationship with his mother, Kay, after it became apparent she was leaking personal details about him.

RadarOnline.com can disclose that the 55-year-old Hollywood star did not completely cut ties with his 93-year-old mother. Instead, he chose to engage in cautious conversations, feeling that there had been a significant breach of trust between them.

During an interview, McConaughey recounted, “For about eight years, our Sunday phone calls were limited to brief exchanges due to the sensitive information that was leaking.”

He added, “I’d confide in her on Sunday, and by Tuesday, I’d read those details in the news or a local publication.”

Kay shared that during this period of strained communication, they were effectively on what she termed a “hiatus.”

He remarked, “Eventually, I reached a stage where my relationship with her mattered more than any awkward publicity that could arise. I accepted that my mom could be herself.” McConaughey expressed his newfound openness, saying, “Let’s loosen the reins, Mom. Share whatever you like.”

Since rekindling their bond, the Academy Award winner stated that Kay has become more conscientious of his boundaries.

He joyfully shared, “During red carpet events, she asks, ‘Any guidelines?’ I respond, ‘No rules! Share the juiciest tales you want.’ And that’s exactly what she did, and it was entertaining.”

“It’s much more enjoyable now,” McConaughey concluded.
