Mavericks GM Nico Harrison looks at Kyrie Irving fill-in for cheap

The Dallas Mavericks had quite the eventful season, with General Manager Nico Harrison making bold moves like trading away franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic. Despite the questionable nature of the Doncic trade, Harrison showed some foresight that could have paid off if not for injuries to key players like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.

Davis suffered an adductor strain in his first game with the Mavericks on Feb. 8, leaving the team struggling to stay competitive without him. The situation worsened when Irving tore his left ACL on March 3 against the Sacramento Kings, further depleting the team’s lineup.

Looking ahead to the 2025-26 season, with Irving likely sidelined for most of the regular season, the Mavericks are in need of a starting point guard to fill the void. Reports suggest that Dallas is in the market for a temporary starter until Irving’s return, offering the opportunity for a player to step into the starting role at the beginning of the season.

While the addition of top draft pick Cooper Flagg will undoubtedly strengthen the team, it does not address the need for a starting guard. Drafting guard Dylan Harper from Rutgers may be an option, but Harrison is unlikely to take that route given the backlash he faced for the Doncic trade.

One potential target for the Mavericks is Boston Celtics’ Jrue Holiday, a playmaking guard who could provide a temporary solution until Irving is back on the court. With the team currently over the salary cap, they would need to explore trade options to acquire Holiday, who is reportedly available as the Celtics look to trim their luxury tax obligations.

Holiday’s $32.4 million salary for the upcoming season may be a hurdle, but the Mavericks could offer assets like Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, and Dereck Lively II to make the deal work. Despite Holiday’s age of 35, he could be open to a contract extension beyond the 2027-28 season if it aligns with the team’s plans.

The acquisition of Holiday would fit Harrison’s vision of a team with players who excel on both ends of the floor. Known for his defensive prowess and playmaking abilities, Holiday could complement the talents of Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, and rookie sensation Cooper Flagg in the Mavericks’ lineup.

In conclusion, while the road to acquiring Jrue Holiday may require some financial maneuvering, the potential benefits for the Dallas Mavericks in terms of on-court performance and roster balance make it a move worth considering. As the team looks to bounce back from a challenging season, adding a seasoned guard like Holiday could be the missing piece to their puzzle.
