Historical Events on this Day:

On May 18, 1980, the Mount St. Helens volcano in Washington erupted, resulting in the loss of approximately 57 lives.

Other Significant Events:

In 1863, the Siege of Vicksburg commenced during the Civil War and concluded on July 4 with a Union triumph.

In 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court supported “separate but equal” racial segregation in the Plessy v. Ferguson case. This decision was later overturned in 1954 by Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka.

In 1927, a tragic school attack occurred in Bath Township, Michigan, where a local farmer, Andrew Kehoe, planted explosives in a schoolhouse and his truck, resulting in the deaths of 38 children and six adults.

In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Tennessee Valley Authority, the largest public utility in the United States.

In 1973, Archibald Cox was appointed as the Watergate special prosecutor by U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson.

In 1981, the New York Native newspaper published the first report on what would later be known as AIDS, regarding rumors of a new disease among LGBTQ+ individuals.

In 1998, the U.S. government filed an antitrust case against Microsoft, accusing the software giant of limiting consumer choices in the computer market. A settlement was reached in 2001.

In 2018, a tragic incident unfolded at a Houston-area high school where a 17-year-old opened fire, resulting in the loss of eight students and two teachers.
