International Workers Day: A Call to Action for Immigrant Rights

May 1 is International Workers Day, also known as May Day. This day has deep roots in the US labor movement’s fight for an 8-hour workday and is celebrated worldwide. In recent years, May Day has increasingly focused on immigrant rights in the US, as immigrants have faced ongoing attacks and oppression.

This year’s May Day holds particular significance as the Trump administration continues to target immigrants and violate their rights through aggressive deportation tactics. Thousands of federal workers have been unlawfully fired, and immigrants, including US citizens, are being detained and deported in violation of their constitutional rights.

A Wake-up Call for Climate Advocates

As climate advocates, it is essential to recognize the implications of these actions on our work. Climate-fueled disasters are increasingly displacing populations, and it is crucial to ensure that the rights of those forced to move are respected. The impacts of climate change disproportionately affect vulnerable communities in regions like Africa, Asia, and the Arctic.

Rich nations, which have contributed significantly to the climate crisis, must take responsibility for addressing the inequitable impacts of climate change. This includes protecting the rights of those who are displaced due to climate-related events.

Migrant Rights Under Attack

The Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants has led to numerous human rights violations. US citizens have been wrongfully detained and deported, and individuals have been denied due process and constitutional rights. The government’s actions, including illegal deportations and detention of individuals like Tufts PhD student Rümeysa Öztürk, highlight the urgent need to protect immigrant rights.

Despite court rulings and public outcry, the administration continues to engage in unlawful activities against immigrants, including children. The escalating attacks on immigrants and the disregard for their rights are alarming and require immediate action.

Standing in Solidarity Across Movements

In response to the administration’s inhumane treatment of immigrants, organizations like the National Partnership for New Americans, United We Dream, and the American Civil Liberties Union are standing in solidarity to protect immigrant rights. It is crucial for civil society to speak out against authoritarian behavior and defend democracy and human rights.

As a science advocacy organization, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is actively supporting immigrant and refugee rights and condemning the government’s actions. UCS recognizes the interconnectedness of worker and immigrant rights and the importance of collective action in defending these rights.

Join a May Day Protest Near You

This May 1, people across the nation will gather to demonstrate their support for worker and immigrant rights. The rallying cry for this year’s May Day is “One struggle, one fight, all workers unite!” It is essential for individuals to join in solidarity to advocate for fair wages, safe workplaces, and dignity for all workers and immigrants.

UCS encourages all workers to stand against the mass firings and attacks on federal workers by the administration. As a distress signal, “Mayday” calls for unity and courage in the face of authoritarianism and injustice. Join the fight for justice and immigrant rights by participating in a May Day event near you.
