The mayor of a small Pennsylvania borough, with a population of around 14,000, has ignited a national firestorm after taking controversial steps to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.
According to a report by WTAE , Mayor Dontae Comans issued an URGENT COMMUNITY ALERT last week, responding to reports from residents about sightings of ICE agents apprehending individuals in the area.
“Let me be perfectly clear,” he stated, “Wilkinsburg does not cooperate with ICE. Our borough has a standing ordinance that safeguards ALL residents from discrimination—regardless of immigration status, nationality, race, religion, gender, or background.”
Comans then encouraged residents to reach out to him immediately if they observed any ICE activity, providing guidance on their legal rights.

Know Your Rights when encountering ICE:
— You do not have to speak with ICE without a lawyer present
— You do not have to answer their questions
— You do not have to identify yourself
— You do not have to consent to a search
— You can request to see a signed warrant — you do NOT have to open your door unless they show one

In a subsequent interview with KDKA, Comans provided an eyebrow-raising justification for his actions, which many see as a blatant disregard for immigration laws. “Everyone here is family,” he asserted. “We just want to protect each other, no matter what part of life you’re from.”
When pressed on his stance regarding those who argue that undocumented immigrants should not be in the country, Comans continued to challenge the logic of law-abiding citizens. “That’s how this country started,” he responded. “It’s all about finding a path to residency, and I believe we need to assist them.”

Given the apparent defiance of immigration laws demonstrated by Comans, one must wonder: how long before we see tangible consequences for such actions?
