Cody Balmer (Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office)

Media Coverage of Arson Suspect Raises Questions About Bias

Cody Balmer, the individual accused of setting fire to the Pennsylvania governor’s mansion while Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were inside, has been identified as a far-left socialist and supporter of Black Lives Matter (BLM). However, this characterization seems to be absent from mainstream media narratives.

Interestingly, it appears that at least two liberal news outlets are focusing on Balmer’s criticism of Democrats, perhaps hinting at an ideological alignment with the right. One might wonder: is the intent to portray him as a right-wing extremist, or to suggest that the Democratic party faces threats akin to those experienced by Republicans? Regardless, such implications seem disingenuous.

Consider the following excerpt from ABC News (emphasis added):

Arson at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence was ‘domestic terrorism’: Fire chief

Cody Balmer, who is suspected of starting a fire on Sunday at Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro’s residence, was denied bail at his arraignment on Monday.

Balmer — a mechanic who had previously expressed disdain for Democrats on social media — was arrested in connection with the fire early Sunday, sources familiar with the suspected arsonist told ABC News.

Notably, tucked away at the end of the article is a comment from former President Donald Trump:

“The attacker was not a fan of Trump I understand just from what I’ve read and from what I’ve been told,” Trump stated, underscoring that he wasn’t privy to the motive. “The attacker basically wasn’t a fan of anybody’s. Probably just a whack job. And certainly a thing like that cannot be allowed to happen.”

Sources acquainted with Balmer indicated that his grievances against the Democratic party were largely tied to financial matters.

Curiously, the article refrains from labeling Balmer as leftist or far-left, a glaring omission. CNN’s coverage mirrors this trend, highlighting his disdain for Democrats without elaborating on his self-identified socialist beliefs.

CNN is doing continuous segments on the man who set fire to the PA Governor’s mansion.

They say that according to social media posts, he has a disdain for just Democrats and Joe Biden.

This selective portrayal raises eyebrows. As one commentator noted:

Just a mechanic, huh?

His history of left-wing socialism and BLM activism just aren’t relevant, I guess. https://t.co/RhVSVUIFEg

One can’t help but wonder: would the media exhibit the same reticence if the suspect had any affiliations that could be even remotely classified as conservative? The answer is likely no.
