An Oklahoma grandmother is facing serious allegations of child abuse after a year-long investigation uncovered disturbing details of the treatment of her two grandchildren. Davena Marx, 53, reportedly drugged the children, locked them in a dog cage for hours, and subjected them to physical and emotional abuse.

The grandchildren, aged 8 and 6, were allegedly fed anti-psychotic drugs, whipped with a belt, and forced to endure harsh punishment such as having Marx grind her heels into their feet. The abuse also included making them exercise until they collapsed. These shocking revelations came to light after a welfare check was conducted following a tip about the abuse.

One of the children revealed to investigators that Marx would drug them with Seroquel, a medication used to treat schizophrenia and sleep disorders. The drug is not recommended for children under 13, yet traces of it were found in both grandchildren. The young boy further disclosed that Marx would lock them in a dog cage whenever she wanted to go out alone.

The Department of Human Services intervened after receiving reports of abuse, leading to the immediate removal of the children from Marx’s care. They were taken to a Safe Clinic for examination and interviews. Doctors discovered bruising on the granddaughter’s back, consistent with being beaten with a belt, confirming the allegations of physical abuse.

Neighbors reported seeing the siblings scavenging for food in garbage dumpsters, highlighting the dire conditions in which they were living. Authorities also found drugs and paraphernalia in Marx’s apartment, including marijuana and prescription medications. A search warrant revealed a large dog cage, corroborating the grandchildren’s claims of being confined in such conditions.

Marx’s arrest in May came after extensive interviews with the grandchildren, which provided enough evidence to warrant their removal from her custody. The tragic circumstances that led to Marx taking in the children, following their father’s death in a road rage incident, added another layer of complexity to this distressing case.

The gravity of the allegations against Marx underscores the importance of protecting vulnerable children from abuse and neglect. The swift action taken by authorities to rescue the grandchildren from such a traumatic environment is a testament to their commitment to safeguarding the well-being of children. This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and intervention in situations where children are at risk of harm.
