Fernando Rufino is a true testament to resilience and determination. His life story reads like something out of a Hollywood movie, with a series of mishaps and injuries that would make even the toughest of individuals cringe. From being crushed by a moving bus to being struck by lightning on his front doorstep, Rufino has faced more challenges in his life than most people could ever imagine.

Despite his numerous setbacks, Rufino has managed to carve out a successful career as one of Brazil’s most famous Paralympians. Nicknamed the ‘Iron Cowboy’, Rufino has dominated the sport of canoeing, becoming a three-time world champion and a Paralympic gold medalist. His journey to success has been anything but easy, with a laundry list of injuries and accidents that would have deterred most people from pursuing their dreams.

Raised on a traditional farm in central-west Brazil, Rufino’s love for animals and the outdoors has been a constant source of strength throughout his life. After his spinal cord injury ended his career as a rodeo rider, Rufino turned to para canoeing as a way to fulfill his dream of traveling the world. The water became his sanctuary, where he could forget about his disability and feel like any other able-bodied athlete.

Despite missing out on the 2016 Rio Paralympics due to health issues, Rufino made a triumphant comeback at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games, becoming the first Brazilian to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games. Now, as he prepares to defend his title at the upcoming Paralympic Games, Rufino is determined to cement his legacy as the true ‘Iron Cowboy’.

Cheered on by his family from their farm at home, Rufino will face off against his good friend and training partner, Igor Tofalini, in a bid for gold. The two former rodeo cowboys share a unique bond, supporting each other both on and off the water. As Rufino gears up for the competition, he remains focused and determined to add another gold medal to his collection.

As he looks towards the future, Rufino knows that the Los Angeles 2028 Games may be his last shot at Paralympic glory. But regardless of the outcome, Rufino is content in the knowledge that he has already achieved more than he ever thought possible. A true warrior and a champion in every sense of the word, Fernando Rufino will undoubtedly be remembered as the ‘Iron Cowboy’ for years to come.
