The Andy Warhol Foundation has recently announced the recipients of the highly coveted 2024 Arts Writers Grant. This year, 30 talented writers have been selected to receive grants ranging from $15,000 to $50,000 across three categories – Articles, Books, and Short-Form Writing – totaling an impressive $945,000 in awards. The foundation has been a strong supporter of art writing, having supported over 425 emerging and established authors since the grant was first launched in 2006.
Among the recipients is former Hyperallergic News Editor Jasmine Weber, who will be using her grant to explore the artistic legacies of the historically Black beaches in Sag Harbor on Long Island, New York. Other notable grantees include former Los Angeles Times art and design columnist Carolina Miranda, who will be focusing on emerging and mid-career Latine and Latin American artists in various cities. The grant recipients cover a wide range of topics including art’s relationship to fossil fuel extraction, Native art and activism, migration, DIY publishing, and LGBTQ comic artist communities.
In the “Books” category, Nizan Shaked, a professor at California State University, Long Beach, has been awarded a grant for her upcoming publication Art Against the System, which will explore how artists disrupt state institutions and legal structures through their work. The grant recipients come from diverse backgrounds and will be exploring a variety of topics and themes in their writing.
