Bed Bath and Beyond has been hit with a hefty $230,000 fine for selling children’s pajamas and hot water bottles that did not meet safety standards, according to the Commerce Commission.

The commission found that the retailer breached the Fair Trading Act by not including proper safety instructions on hot water bottles and failing to have permanent warning labels on children’s pajamas in the required locations.

Vanessa Horne, the Commerce Commission’s general manager of competition, fair trading, and credit, emphasized the importance of businesses ensuring that their products comply with legal requirements to keep consumers safe.

The non-compliant products, which were sold between March and October 2023, put over 27,000 consumers at risk due to the lack of necessary safety information. This included thousands of children’s pajama sets without proper fire hazard warnings and tens of thousands of hot water bottles without safe usage and storage instructions.

The Auckland District Court handed down the sentence to the retailer for the violations.

It is crucial for businesses to prioritize product safety and compliance with regulations to protect consumers from harm.
