High Potential has dropped a tantalizing breadcrumb, confirming that Mekhi Phifer is definitely not playing the elusive Roman, who just won’t seem to show his face. So, who is this mysterious character, and what role does he play?
In the recent episode aired on Tuesday, September 22, viewers watched as Morgan (Kaitlin Olson) presumed her friends Daphne (Javicia Leslie) and Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) had managed to track down Roman, sending them off to Nevada based on a lead. However, after covertly following a man portrayed by Phifer, a subsequent image sent to Morgan reveals that he is not who they hoped.
This nameless fellow remains tight-lipped with Daphne and Oz about his identity, but ultimately seeks out Morgan himself. Arthur, as he introduces himself, claims to be a friend of Roman’s tasked with checking in on Morgan and Ava (Amirah J). A glance at Arthur’s business card reveals his connection to a landscaping business, raising an eyebrow about how he intersects with the ever-elusive Roman, who is still ducking the law.
In a plot twist worthy of a soap opera, Roman has sent Arthur on a spy mission of sorts to glean information about how Morgan, his former flame, has ended up entangled with people Roman is currently running from. The LAPD previously uncovered that Roman was an FBI informant, but his story seems far from complete, leaving Morgan in the dark about his bizarre disappearance.
This episode also wrapped up a significant plot arc involving the Game Maker (David Giuntoli). This character, who reveals himself as Matthew, confronts Morgan at the precinct. Although it’s evident he’s the prime suspect in a string of kidnappings the Major Crimes unit has been investigating, he manages to dodge direct ties to each case.
In a gripping turn of events, Morgan’s instincts kick in as she manages to track down another missing person, thwart a near-murder attempt, and connect the dots back to Matthew. In a frantic bid to escape justice, Matthew attempts to leap off a balcony, but Morgan has seen his move coming and prevents his getaway.
While the episode may not have unveiled the real Roman, executive producer Todd Harthan previously discussed with Us Weekly the intricate balancing act he faces in creating a procedural series that still maintains the allure of overarching mysteries. The challenge? Crafting episodes that offer satisfying standalone cases while threading through the serialized drama that keeps viewers tuned in week after week.

He elaborated, “Achieving that balance is a delicate endeavor, and that’s why a talented team is essential—constantly reminding us that if we reveal too much too soon, it can upset the narrative dynamics for subsequent episodes.”
