In the wake of his assassination on September 10, a torrent of misinformation regarding Charlie Kirk has spread rapidly across social media.
His statements have been frequently misrepresented, progressives have selectively quoted snippets from his debates to distort his views, and his ideas have been oversimplified through inaccurate generalizations. Here’s a look at some of the most prevalent misconceptions:
Homosexuality
Author Stephen King asserted that Kirk had called for “stoning gays” in a social media post. He later deleted this post and issued an apology after acknowledging his error.
In truth, Kirk was merely quoting the Bible in response to YouTube personality Ms. Rachel, who had been selectively interpreting Biblical verses to promote Pride Month.
“By the way, Ms. Rachel, it might be useful to open your Bible. In that same scripture, Leviticus 18 states, ‘if a man lies with another man, he shall be stoned to death.’ Just saying,” he commented.
Kirk has also responded to a student who claimed there was no place for gay men in conservatism by citing various gay conservatives.
“Why does what they do in their personal lives concern you so much?” he asked.
His criticisms were focused on what he termed the “LGBTQ agenda” in politics, advising a gay student in Wisconsin: “I don’t believe one should introduce themselves solely on the basis of their sexuality, as that’s not the essence of who they are.”
Black Women
Kirk has been misquoted as claiming that “Black women lack the intellectual capacity to be taken seriously”—a statement that prompted the Financial Times to publish a retraction after it circulated.
The actual context of his words was directed not at Black women as a whole, but specifically at four individuals: Michelle Obama, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, political commentator Joy Reid, and the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee from Texas.
On his show from July 14, 2023, he remarked: “Had we described those women as products of affirmative action, we would have been labeled racists. Now, they openly claim, ‘I’m here because of affirmative action.’ We recognize it; you simply wouldn’t be taken seriously otherwise.”
Gun Violence
Kirk was discussing gun violence when he was murdered at Utah Valley University in Orem. Following the death of the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, former Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah labeled him “a white man advocating violence,” which ultimately led to her dismissal.
Kirk never endorsed violence, believing that healthy discourse was the most virtuous method of addressing such issues. He staunchly supported the Second Amendment and the civil liberties it guarantees.
At a 2023 event, he articulated: “There’s a cost associated with driving—50,000 fatalities annually. Yet, we agree the benefits of driving—speed, access, mobility, the availability of goods and services—outweigh this price.”
“It’s crucial to understand that zero gun deaths is unattainable; a society with an armed populace will not experience a complete absence of gun fatalities. Nonetheless, I believe the right to bear arms, even if it results in some unfortunate gun-related deaths each year, is a worthy trade-off for the safeguarding of our other inherent rights.”
He further elaborated on preventing school shootings by drawing parallels with armed security measures at public venues: “How do we halt shootings at baseball games? Through the presence of armed security. The same principle applies to airports.”
Civil Rights Act
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Kirk in a recent media statement.
“Let’s be clear; Charlie Kirk believed that the Civil Rights Act, which granted Black Americans voting rights, was a mistake,” she remarked, mistakenly conflating the 1964 Civil Rights Act with the Voting Rights Act that followed a year later.
This is an area where Kirk has faced significant misunderstanding. He has not opposed civil rights as a concept but rather the interpretation that has emerged in modern discourse.
“I hold a somewhat radical view on this topic, but I stand by it, and I’ve considered it deeply,” Kirk expressed at a Turning Point USA event in December 2023. “We made a significant error passing the Civil Rights Act during the 1960s.”
He asserted that “the judiciary has been unnecessarily passive,” suggesting that federal courts regard the Civil Rights Act as equivalent to the U.S. Constitution itself. He argued that this has resulted in a “permanent ‘DEI’ bureaucracy,” referencing the diversity, equity, and inclusion mandates that have influenced hiring practices across numerous establishments in recent times.
However, he has recognized the merits of the act, saying: “Certain aspects of the Civil Rights Act were commendable,” reported Kirk after being challenged by an audience member. “The fundamental aim was laudable: ensuring that no American is denied entry to a business based on skin color or ethnic background.”
Women’s Rights
It is often circulated online that Kirk asserted women should not have the right to vote—a blatant falsehood.
Kirk has consistently emphasized the importance of women in family life, advocating that they should prioritize motherhood and family over professional pursuits.
In a recent appearance on Fox’s “The Ingraham Angle” shortly before his death, he stated: “Raising children ranks above having a successful career. I would advise young women to focus on marriage and family at this critical moment, and remind them that careers can always wait.”
Black Pilots
Kirk has been quoted saying, “If I see a Black pilot, I hope he’s qualified.” This statement has been widely circulated without the necessary context.
Kirk originally made this comment on the Charlie Kirk Show, discussing DEI policies in pilot hiring.
During the discussion, one guest, Andrew Kolvet, noted that instances of turbulence lead to a moment of relief when observing the pilot’s composure and expertise before takeoff.
Kirk responded with his comment about Black pilots, clarifying that it reflected his concerns regarding DEI initiatives.
“That’s not my character; that isn’t my belief,” Kirk stated. “I want to express this clearly because I’m connecting the dots. If a CEO is pushing a competent white candidate out in favor of someone less qualified, I react by hoping that the new pilot is genuinely qualified and not just someone who passed half of their flight simulator assessments through affirmative action.”
