Anthony Laya-Alvarado (Chicago Police Department, Multiplottr)

A Venezuelan Migrant Receives Three-Year Sentence for Robbery Near Clybourn Corridor

A Venezuelan migrant named Anthony Laya-Alvarado, also known as Elvis Laya, has been sentenced to three years in prison for robbing a woman near the Clybourn Corridor in September. However, due to Illinois laws, he is expected to be released in less than a year after the crime was committed.

Laya-Alvarado pleaded guilty to robbery in front of Judge Anjana Hansen, as documented in court records.

The incident took place when Laya-Alvarado targeted a 37-year-old woman from Streeterville who was walking in the 900 block of West Weed around 10:50 a.m. on September 21. He forcefully took her necklace and fled on a motorized bike operated by another individual.

Chicago police officers, who had information about the robbery suspects riding the same motorized bike, attempted to apprehend Laya-Alvarado and his accomplice as they rode near Marcy Court and Cortland at 11 a.m. Despite the driver managing to escape, Laya-Alvarado was apprehended with the woman’s yellow necklace with an “R” pendant in his possession.

This robbery was part of a series of similar crimes that occurred within a few days, primarily in the Loop area and along the lakefront.

According to the law, Laya-Alvarado’s three-year sentence will be halved for good behavior. Additionally, he will receive credit for 393 days spent in jail and participating in programs while awaiting trial. The Illinois Department of Corrections has scheduled his release for September 19, just two days before the first anniversary of the robbery.
