Mikaela Shiffrin was eager to showcase her skills on Sunday in front of a massive crowd at Copper Mountain who came out to support the local hero in a World Cup slalom event. However, she wanted them to know that their support played a crucial role in her victory as well.

Despite feeling the effects of jet lag, travel fatigue, and a challenging giant slalom race at high altitude the day before, Shiffrin managed to post the fastest times in both runs and secured her 104th World Cup victory with a lead of 1.23 seconds. She has been dominant in all three slalom races this season.

“It was just as tough as I expected it to be, with a lot of fatigue in my legs,” Shiffrin said after the race. “The crowd really propelled me down the hill. The louder they cheered, the harder I pushed. I just let their energy carry me to the finish line.”

Despite the nerves and pressure of performing in front of an estimated 11,000 Colorado fans, including numerous young girls cheering her on, Shiffrin pushed through the physical pain like she would during a grueling interval workout, refusing to give in and giving her all.

At 30 years old, holding multiple records and championships, Shiffrin continues to strive for excellence. Her mother and coach, Eileen, marvels at her daughter’s unwavering motivation and nerves before each race.

Shiffrin’s passion lies in the process of skiing, the feeling she experiences between the start and finish line when everything clicks. This inner drive pushes her to constantly improve and seek that perfect run.

While she excels in slalom, Shiffrin is working on regaining her form in giant slalom. Despite a challenging start to the season in GS, she remains focused on the process of improvement and is determined to reach her peak performance in the discipline.

Last year, a giant slalom crash at Killington left Shiffrin with a serious abdominal injury, sidelining her for two months. Despite the setback, she remains resilient and focused on her goals, celebrating each milestone along the way.

Reflecting on her journey, Shiffrin acknowledges the importance of enjoying the process and savoring the moments of success. Qualifying for her fourth Olympics is a significant achievement for her, reinforcing her dedication to the sport and her pursuit of excellence.
