The Annecy Animation Film Festival has recently announced its first Honorary Cristal recipient for 2026, and it is none other than the renowned producer, writer, and animator, Mike Judge. Judge, best known for co-creating “King of the Hill” and creating “Beavis and Butt-Head,” will be honored during this year’s festival, which is scheduled to take place from June 21 to 27.
Born in Ecuador in 1962 and raised in New Mexico, Mike Judge initially studied physics at UCSD before finding his passion for animation in the late 1980s. His unique humor and style quickly gained attention when his cartoons were featured in “Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation” and later picked up by MTV, leading to the creation of his iconic characters, Beavis and Butt-Head.
Judge’s success continued with the creation of “King of the Hill” in collaboration with Greg Daniels, a five-time Emmy award-winning writer. The series, which ran for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2010, received critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. Last year, Hulu released a long-awaited 14th season of the show, with Saladin K. Patterson serving as the executive producer and showrunner.
The Honorary Cristal awarded to Mike Judge recognizes his significant contributions to the art of animation over his three-decade-long career. Marcel Jean, the artistic director of the Annecy Festival, praised Judge as a cultural icon who has seamlessly transitioned between animation and live-action projects, including the cult classic “Idiocracy” and the acclaimed series “Silicon Valley.”
In a recent article for the French animation magazine Blink Blank, Jean highlighted Judge’s impact on U.S. animated TV shows and his fearless approach to tackling controversial topics in his work. Judge’s visit to the Annecy Festival is seen as a momentous occasion to celebrate his influence on American adult animation and honor his legacy.
As part of the festival, executive producers Greg Daniels and showrunner Saladin K. Patterson will join Mike Judge for a special screening event by the lake, where they will discuss the enduring cultural impact of “King of the Hill” and “Beavis and Butt-Head.” The event will also include an exclusive preview of “King of the Hill” Season 15 and a signing session for fans.
Fans can currently stream Season 14 of “King of the Hill” on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally. Stay tuned for more updates on Mike Judge and his groundbreaking animated creations at the Annecy Animation Film Festival this year.
