Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife recently shared the harrowing details of a terrifying attack they experienced at their home. The couple was shot a total of 17 times by a masked gunman who also went on to “assassinate” another state lawmaker and her husband.

The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, shortly after a Democratic fundraising dinner. The Hoffmans were startled by loud banging on their front door and the voice of someone claiming to be a police officer. When they opened the door, they were confronted by a man wielding a gun.

In a courageous attempt to protect themselves, John lunged at the gunman, but was struck nine times. Yvette also tried to push the man away and close the door, but she was hit eight times by gunfire. Their daughter, Hope, managed to lock the door and call 911 for help.

The gunman, identified as Vance Boelter, fled the scene and proceeded to the home of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman. Tragically, he shot and killed Melissa, her husband, and their family dog. The Hoffmans expressed their devastation over the loss of their friends and the heartbreaking nature of the incident.

Both John and Yvette underwent surgery for their injuries and are currently in stable condition. John remains in critical but stable condition, while Yvette is stable. Boelter was apprehended after a massive manhunt and is now facing murder charges.

The motive behind the shootings appears to be politically motivated, with Governor Tim Walz describing the incident as “targeted political violence.” The gunman reportedly had a list of 70 targets, many of whom were Democrats or individuals associated with Planned Parenthood and abortion rights.

Despite the risks associated with public service, the Hoffmans emphasized the importance of working towards a more civil society where disagreements can be resolved peacefully. They called for unity and cooperation in the face of such senseless acts of violence.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of these tragic events, Boelter remains in custody awaiting trial for his heinous crimes. The Hoffmans’ bravery and resilience in the face of adversity serve as a reminder of the strength and courage that can emerge in the darkest of times.
