Montgomery Mayor Calls for Removal of “Politicized” Billboard Artwork

Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed has recently made headlines by requesting the removal of a controversial billboard artwork in the city. The artwork in question features a historic photograph from Selma’s infamous “Bloody Sunday” overlaid with the Trump campaign slogan “Make America Great Again.” The image, which was created by the art collective For Freedoms, has sparked a debate about the intersection of politics and art.

The photograph in question, taken by civil rights photographer Spider Martin in 1965, captures the tense moment before state troopers charged towards civil rights leaders during the march for voting rights in Selma. This pivotal moment in history led to the passing of the Voting Rights Act, which outlawed discriminatory voting practices. The use of this powerful image in conjunction with the MAGA slogan has raised concerns about the politicization of historical events.

Mayor Reed, a Democrat and Montgomery’s first Black mayor, cited the need to be cautious when using imagery from such important moments in history. He emphasized the importance of treating history with respect and ensuring that it unites rather than divides communities. The decision to request the removal of the billboard was based on these considerations.

The exact location of the billboard in Montgomery remains unclear, but it was part of a temporary public art installation funded by the city. The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts had purchased the billboard, but the decision to remove it was made by the mayor’s office in response to the controversy surrounding the artwork.

Tracy Martin, the daughter of Spider Martin, expressed her disagreement with the removal of the artwork, calling it a violation of freedom of speech. She believes that the message behind the billboard raises important questions about the notion of making America great again and challenges the idea that America was greater in the past.

In response to the controversy, For Freedoms Co-executive Director Michelle Woo acknowledged the pressures faced by cultural institutions in today’s political climate. The organization remains committed to reflecting on historical events that shape our present reality. However, co-founder Eric Gottesman criticized the removal of the artwork as an act of censorship, highlighting the importance of freedom of expression in art.

This is not the first time that For Freedoms has faced backlash for its billboards. In 2016, a similar installation in Pearl, Mississippi, prompted calls for removal from local officials. Despite the controversy, the organization has installed over 500 billboards since its inception.

In his defense of the decision to remove the billboard, Mayor Reed emphasized the city’s discretion over commissioned materials. He reiterated the city’s commitment to preserving and honoring the legacy of events like the Selma to Montgomery March in ways that are inclusive, educational, and reflective of the community’s collective memory.

The debate over the For Freedoms billboard in Montgomery serves as a reminder of the power of art to provoke thought, spark dialogue, and reflect on the complexities of history and politics. As the conversation continues, it is important to consider the diverse perspectives and voices that contribute to our understanding of the past and present. With the rise of technology and the internet, the way we consume information has drastically changed. Gone are the days of relying solely on traditional newspapers and magazines for news updates.
