Mosquitoes have been bothering humans for over a million years, and recent research suggests that they have been feeding on early humans for even longer. A study analyzing the DNA of 38 modern mosquito species revealed that an ancestral mosquito species developed a preference for feeding on early humans between 2.9 and 1.6 million years ago.

The researchers focused on 11 mosquito species from the Anopheles leucosphyrus group, which provided a comprehensive overview of the group’s genetics. Some of these species, such as Anopheles dirus and Anopheles baimaii, are known to spread malaria and prefer feeding on humans. Other species in the group feed on nonhuman primates, mostly monkeys, or on both humans and nonhuman primates.

The genetic analysis allowed the researchers to reconstruct the evolutionary history of these mosquitoes and estimate when they first started biting humans. The data suggested that the leucosphyrus group was the first to adapt to biting humans in a submerged landmass called Sundaland, which is now part of the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, and Java. Other types of mosquitoes only acquired a preference for biting humans in the last 10,000 years.

The shift to feeding on humans was a significant evolutionary change for these mosquitoes, as they had previously fed exclusively on nonhuman primates in the rainforest canopy. This ancestral behavior of biting nonhuman primates dates back more than 3.6 million years.

The researchers believe that the adaptation to bite humans was likely in response to the arrival of early human ancestors in Southeast Asia around 1.8 million years ago. The abundance of Homo erectus in the region would have driven this evolutionary change, possibly due to the unique odor of early humans attracting the mosquitoes.

While only a small percentage of mosquito species have evolved to bite humans, these insects have been a nuisance to humans for thousands of years.
