Motorola’s Moto G line has always held a special place in the hearts of many smartphone users. For some, it represents their first foray into the world of smartphones, bringing back memories of college days and simpler times. However, the latest batch of handsets from Motorola – the Moto G77, G67, G17, and G17 Power – have left many feeling disappointed.

While these phones boast competitive specs and features for their budget and mid-range price points, they all share a common flaw that makes them a tough sell for savvy consumers. The issue at hand is the lack of long-term software support, a crucial factor for ensuring the longevity and usability of a smartphone.

Let’s take a closer look at each model in the lineup. The Moto G77 offers three years of major OS upgrades and four and a half years of security patches, falling short of the industry standard for software support. The Moto G67, priced at £199.99, only provides two years of OS updates and four years of security support, lagging behind its competitors in the market.

Moving down the line, the Moto G17 offers zero major OS updates and only two years of security patches, making it a risky investment for anyone looking for a phone that will stand the test of time. The Moto G17 Power, priced higher at €279, offers improvements in battery and charging but fails to address the software support issue.

The lack of commitment to software support becomes even more concerning when considering the new regulations set forth by the European Union. The EU now requires smartphones and tablets to offer at least five years of OS and security updates, a standard that Motorola’s new Moto G phones fall short of meeting. While Motorola has stated its commitment to meeting these regulations, it remains to be seen if the devices will be updated accordingly.

In the midst of these developments, consumers in the UK and US are left with limited options when it comes to choosing a smartphone that prioritizes longevity and sustainability. With other brands offering longer software support and a more eco-friendly approach to device lifespan, it’s important for consumers to weigh their options carefully before purchasing a new Moto G phone.

In conclusion, while the new Moto G phones may offer attractive features and competitive pricing, the lack of long-term software support is a dealbreaker for many tech-savvy consumers. As Motorola works to address these issues and comply with industry standards, it’s essential for consumers to consider their options carefully and prioritize sustainability when choosing a new smartphone.
