Despite the complexity of these new rules, several developers have seized the opportunity to distribute their apps beyond Apple’s ecosystem. In addition to the EU, other markets like Japan are also exploring alternative app store options. Apple recently announced compliance with the Mobile Software Competition Act in Japan, allowing developers to distribute apps and process payments outside of the App Store.

In the EU, iPhone users can now access alternative app stores such as AltStore PAL, Setapp Mobile (now closed), and Epic Games Store. AltStore PAL, developed by Riley Testut, offers an open-source platform for independent developers to distribute their apps alongside popular offerings like Delta and Clip.
