Multiplier Holdings: Revolutionizing Professional Service Businesses with AI
In late 2022, Noah Pepper, a former Stripe business lead for the Asia Pacific region, embarked on a journey that would reshape the landscape of professional service firms. Initially founding Multiplier with the intention of selling software to tax accountants, Pepper soon realized the transformative potential of AI, particularly with the advent of ChatGPT.
“I realized I was barking up the wrong tree by trying to build a SaaS business, and instead I should figure out how to make these people more effective,” he shared with JS.
Multiplier’s strategic pivot led to the acquisition of Citrine International Tax, a boutique provider of cross-border tax accounting services. By integrating AI capabilities developed by Multiplier, Citrine witnessed a remarkable transformation, more than doubling its profit margins. This success prompted Pepper to shift the focus of Multiplier towards acquiring existing professional service businesses and empowering them with AI solutions.
Today, Multiplier, now rebranded as Multiplier Holdings, announces a significant milestone with a total of $27.5 million raised in seed and Series A financing. Lightspeed Venture Partners spearheaded the Series A funding round, following a successful seed round led by Ribbit Capital with participation from SV Angel.
Multiplier’s approach aligns with a burgeoning trend in the startup landscape, where AI-powered companies acquire and scale existing service businesses. This PE-style roll-up strategy has garnered interest from prominent VCs like General Catalyst, Elad Gil, Thrive, and Khosla Ventures, who recognize the potential of integrating AI solutions into traditional service-oriented enterprises.
Justin Overdorff, partner at Lightspeed, emphasizes the effectiveness of this strategy when applied to smaller companies, as they are more receptive to operational changes. He noted, “If you go to an accounting firm that has 200 accountants, it’s unlikely to get adopted at a [high] rate.”
Multiplier’s success story with Citrine exemplifies the value of this approach, not only in improving margins but also fostering growth within the acquired entities. With ambitions to challenge the Big Four accounting firms, Multiplier aims to expand its AI-powered offerings beyond personal tax compliance.
Pepper envisions a future where Multiplier continues to acquire high-recurring-revenue service firms led by forward-thinking individuals eager to leverage AI for business enhancement. He likened the process to a venture-style investment, placing bets on exceptional leaders poised to drive innovation in their respective fields.
