Mumbai Indians (MI) are gearing up for the IPL 2025 playoffs by naming their replacements for the outgoing overseas stars. With Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch, and Ryan Rickelton set to depart for international duty, MI has signed Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka as temporary replacements.
The decision to bring in these players was made due to the clash between the IPL schedule and England’s upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies, as well as the lead-up to the World Test Championship Final. The replacements will be available from the playoffs stage onwards, should MI qualify.
Currently, MI is in a good position to make it to the playoffs with 14 points from 12 matches. Their fate is in their own hands, especially after Delhi Capitals’ recent loss to the Gujarat Titans. MI will face DC at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21 in a crucial match.
Jonny Bairstow, Richard Gleeson, and Charith Asalanka have recent experience in franchise cricket. Bairstow played for the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 2025, scoring 232 runs in eight innings. Gleeson represented the Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the same tournament and was the second-highest wicket-taker. Asalanka, the Sri Lanka white-ball captain, played for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 2025.
Bairstow, with his IPL experience and batting prowess, is expected to fill the void left by Jacks and Rickelton at the top of the order. Gleeson’s pace and wicket-taking ability make him a valuable addition to the MI bowling attack. Asalanka’s all-round skills as a left-handed batsman and off-spin bowler provide versatility to the team.
MI fans can look forward to seeing these new signings in action as the team aims to secure a spot in the IPL playoffs. With Bairstow, Gleeson, and Asalanka joining the squad, MI will be hoping to continue their winning momentum and make a strong push for the title.
