Oktoberfest Grounds Closed Due to Bomb Threat as Munich Investigates Explosion

Authorities in Munich announced the closure of the Oktoberfest fairgrounds on Wednesday morning following a bomb threat related to a tragic explosion that occurred earlier in the day in a residential building in northern Munich. City officials confirmed that at least one fatality was linked to the incident, which police characterized as a deliberate act during a domestic dispute.

As the situation unfolded, it remained uncertain whether the deceased individual was the suspected perpetrator or another victim of the explosion. Another individual, considered to pose no risk to public safety, was reported missing.

In response to the incident, specialized police teams were deployed to the scene to neutralize potential booby traps within the affected building, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.

Images from the vicinity depicted a van engulfed in flames, further raising concerns among investigators and the public.

The bomb threat directed at Oktoberfest was uncovered within a letter purportedly originating from the alleged assailant. Following this revelation, intensive searches were conducted throughout the festival grounds for any additional explosive devices. Authorities urged workers to vacate the area immediately.

City officials confirmed that the Oktoberfest festivities would be halted at least until 5 p.m. local time (1500 GMT) on Wednesday, with ongoing evaluations of the security situation.

This year’s Oktoberfest celebration commenced on September 20 and is scheduled to conclude on October 5. The festival, renowned as the largest beer event in the world, typically welcomes up to 6 million visitors annually.

It is worth noting that Oktoberfest has faced threats in the past; most notably, in 1980, a neo-Nazi attack led to a tragic bombing that resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals, including three children, as well as the assailant himself, Gundolf Koehler, who had ties to a prohibited far-right organization. Over 200 people were reported injured during that incident, marking a dark chapter in the festival’s history.
