The ecological crisis facing freshwater mussels in the turbid rivers of The Thames in London is a cause for concern. Over the past sixty years, these once abundant molluscs have experienced a dramatic decline, with only a few remaining individuals scattered among the shell-filled riverbeds. The situation is not unique to The Thames, as studies across Europe and North America have highlighted the perilous state of freshwater mussel populations worldwide.

With approximately a thousand different species of freshwater mussels, the extent of the damage is difficult to ascertain due to limited research on these imperiled creatures. Mass mortality events have been reported globally, attributed to various factors such as algal blooms, drought, pollution, and diseases. Tadeusz Zając, an associate professor at the Polish Institute of Nature Conservation (PAS), points to a common denominator in these causes – global warming and heatwaves, particularly during the summer months.

Leading the FACEMUSSEL-project, ZajÄ…c and his team are investigating the reasons behind the decline of freshwater mussels and their ability to adapt to the changing environmental conditions of the Anthropocene era. By studying endangered thick-shelled river mussels in Poland and Croatia, the team has observed differences in population dynamics between the two regions, hinting at genetic or biotic factors at play.

Freshwater mussels play a crucial role in ecosystem health as filter feeders, purifying water of sediments, bacteria, and chemicals. A single mussel bed can house thousands of individuals, providing sustenance for various species in the ecosystem. The disappearance of mussel populations can lead to water pollution, increased nitrogen levels, and algal blooms, resulting in widespread ecological damage.

While some experts hesitate to label freshwater mussels as keystone species, ZajÄ…c emphasizes their significance in maintaining ecosystem balance. He likens the ecosystem to a network, where the loss of multiple components can lead to system failure. As we strive to understand and address the decline of freshwater mussels, it is crucial to recognize their vital role in sustaining healthy river ecosystems.

This rewritten article seamlessly integrates into a WordPress platform, offering valuable insights into the ecological shift affecting freshwater mussels in The Thames and beyond.
