The Northern Mystics secured a hard-fought victory over the Southern Steel with a 56-52 win in Auckland on Sunday night. Despite the Steel grabbing a bonus point, it was a disappointing outcome for them in a crucial match for their playoff aspirations.

Trailing 43-40 going into the final quarter, the Steel mounted a comeback and took a two-point lead with five minutes remaining. However, Mystics’ goal attack Filda Vui’s decisive shots in the two-point zone shifted the momentum in favor of the home team, sealing the win.

Both teams struggled with turnovers and misplaced passes throughout the scrappy game. Mystics’ goal keep Catherine Hall and Steel’s Aliyah Dunn engaged in a fierce battle under the post, with Dunn impressively converting all her shots in the one-point zone.

Peta Toeava’s precise feeding and Kimiora Poi’s relentless defense in the midcourt added to the intensity of the match. Carys Stythe’s defensive prowess and Ashleigh Poi’s Steel debut also made notable contributions to the game.

Despite the Steel’s efforts to close the gap, the Mystics managed to maintain their lead through strategic adjustments and improved timing. Wallam’s strong presence in the circle and the Mystics’ effective ball movement helped them secure a crucial victory.

The Steel’s resilient performance in the third quarter, led by Dunn’s scoring prowess and Namana’s impactful substitution, kept the game competitive. However, the Mystics’ consistent play and defensive pressure ultimately proved to be the difference in the end.

Overall, it was a thrilling encounter between two determined teams, with the Mystics emerging victorious in a closely contested battle.
