Naomi Osaka’s Loss to Victoria Mboko in National Bank Open Final Sparks Controversy

Naomi Osaka faced a tough defeat in the final of the National Bank Open in Montreal against 18-year-old Canadian player, Victoria Mboko. In a thrilling match, Mboko came back from a set down to claim victory over the four-time Grand Slam champion. Despite the intense competition on the court, Mboko paid tribute to Osaka, expressing her admiration for the Japanese player whom she has looked up to since she was young.

While Mboko showed sportsmanship and respect towards her opponent, Osaka’s post-match comments stirred up controversy. The tennis star failed to congratulate Mboko during the on-court presentation, leading to backlash on social media. However, Osaka later acknowledged Mboko’s impressive performance in a media interview, praising her opponent for playing exceptionally well.

In addition to the criticism for her behavior towards Mboko, Osaka also faced scrutiny for her apparent lack of effort in the third set of the match. Responding to the accusations, Osaka admitted to experiencing a shift in emotions but emphasized her gratitude for the opportunity to compete in the final.

Meanwhile, as Mboko celebrated her victory in Montreal, Ben Shelton was competing in the men’s final in Toronto. Upon learning of Mboko’s win, Shelton extended his congratulations to the young Canadian player. Both Osaka and Mboko decided to withdraw from the upcoming Cincinnati Open, allowing lucky losers to take their places in the tournament.

Despite the challenges faced in Montreal, both players saw improvements in their rankings ahead of the U.S. Open. Osaka climbed from No. 49 to No. 25, while Mboko jumped from No. 85 to No. 24. Reflecting on her performance, Osaka acknowledged the success of the tournament but expressed a desire for even better results in future competitions.
