Real heroism comes at a devastating cost in the Indian film “Costao.” Directed by Sejal Shah, the true-story drama follows Goan customs officer Costao Fernandes, who becomes a hero after intercepting a massive gold smuggling operation in the 1990s. However, his life takes a tragic turn when he is forced to kill a politically-connected perpetrator in self-defense.
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, one of India’s most acclaimed actors, “Costao” delves into the complexities of Costao’s character. Siddiqui, known for his roles in “Manto,” “Gangs of Wasseypur,” and “Sacred Games,” found portraying the dual life of Costao challenging yet fulfilling. The actor met with the real-life Costao multiple times to capture his essence authentically on screen.
Director Shah, who spent a year researching and developing the story with the real Costao, aimed to create an authentic representation of 1990s Goa. The film subverts typical biopic expectations by portraying Costao’s journey as a tragic hero rather than a victorious one. It explores themes of bravery, honesty, discipline, suffering, redemption, and forgiveness.
The real Costao Fernandes has already seen the film and reacted positively, expressing his happiness and approval. Shah hopes that audiences will take away valuable lessons from the film, emphasizing the challenges of being brave and fighting for one’s beliefs.
“Costao” is produced by Bombay Fables, Bhanushali Studios, and Zee Studios, and it streams on ZEE5 Global from May 1. Siddiqui, who has a global following, is optimistic about the film reaching a wider audience through ZEE5 Global’s international reach.
As Siddiqui continues to work on various projects like “Thama,” “Raat Akeli Hai Part 2,” and “Section 108,” “Costao” stands as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of heroism. With its compelling narrative and stellar performances, the film promises to resonate with audiences worldwide.
