Chicago police have recently released an image of a man they believe to be responsible for a violent attack on a cyclist in the South Loop almost three years ago. The incident took place on May 22, 2023, in the 2200 block of South State Street, where a 62-year-old man was brutally assaulted while riding his bicycle on the sidewalk. The attacker reportedly used a construction sign to beat the victim before proceeding to attack him with the bike itself. The victim was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition following the assault.
Despite the delay in releasing the suspect’s image, the case is now being investigated as a murder. The suspect is described as a Black man in his 20s to 30s, and Chicago police are urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting investigators at 312-744-8261 or submitting tips anonymously at CPDTIP.com. The case number for this investigation is JG-269792.
One peculiar aspect of this case is that it is currently listed as a non-fatal aggravated battery in CPD’s online crime database and the city’s database of violent crime victims. Additionally, efforts to locate a corresponding Cook County Medical Examiner case have been unsuccessful.
