Today, Melania and I stand with Catholics and freedom-loving individuals globally to celebrate the enduring legacy of His Holiness Pope Saint John Paul II. He was a man of deep faith, a champion of freedom, and an ardent defender of human dignity.
During the harsh Nazi occupation of Poland, the young saint developed an unwavering moral compass rooted in holiness, virtue, and courage. Later, as a priest, bishop, and leader of the Roman Catholic Church, he dedicated his life to spreading the eternal truths of the Christian faith across the globe.
Amid challenges like atheistic socialism, religious persecution, and anti-Semitism, Pope John Paul II ignited a moral and spiritual movement that contributed to the fall of Soviet communism and the liberation of Europe’s Captive Nations. He significantly improved relations between Christian and Jewish communities, demonstrating the Catholic Church’s lasting solidarity with the Jewish people. He also reaffirmed Christianity’s foundational role in Western civilization, inspiring many toward truth and beauty.
In 1979, just eight months after becoming Pope, John Paul II returned triumphantly to communist-ruled Poland and declared in his first sermon that no government has the authority to distance people from God. In this iconic sermon, he stated, “Man is incapable of understanding himself fully without Christ. He cannot understand who he is, nor what his true dignity is, nor what his vocation is, nor what his final end is. He cannot understand any of this without Christ.” The congregation responded by singing “We Want God.”
Today, our Nation similarly seeks God, responding not to an oppressive government but to a culture that has long been deprived of spiritual depth. I commend the millions of young Americans who are leading this spiritual revival and believe that Pope Saint John Paul II’s example will continue to inspire countless others to reconnect with God.
As we honor the significant life and impact of Pope John Paul II, especially during this 250th year of American independence, we are reminded that a great Nation must uphold faith in God, love of country, and commitment to liberty. During this Holy Week and the Easter season, I urge all Americans to preserve the memory of Pope Saint John Paul II for future generations.
