Netflix’s highly anticipated event, “Skyscraper Live,” featuring free solo climber Alex Honnold attempting to climb the Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, has been postponed due to inclement weather. The event has been rescheduled for Saturday night U.S. time (Sunday morning Taiwan time) to ensure the safety of the climber and crew.
According to a statement released by Netflix, the decision to postpone the event was made in consideration of the weather conditions. The safety of everyone involved remains the top priority, and the organizers appreciate the understanding of the audience. The rescheduled date and time provide a better opportunity for a successful climb.
Originally scheduled for January, the climb was planned during Taiwan’s dry season to minimize the risk of rain. However, there was still a possibility of precipitation, and the forecast indicated a chance of rain during the morning of the climb. The updated forecast for the rescheduled date promises sunny and pleasant weather in Taipei, as reported by Accuweather.
In an interview with Variety, Plimsoll Prods. Ltd. CEO Grant Mansfield, Plimsoll head of adventure James Smith, and Netflix unscripted VP Jeff Gaspin discussed the precautions taken in case of unfavorable weather conditions. Smith emphasized the importance of ensuring Honnold’s comfort and safety before proceeding with the climb, even if it means further delays.
Gaspin compared the live telecast to launching a space shuttle, highlighting the meticulous planning involved in the event. Mansfield reiterated the commitment to Honnold’s safety and fitness for the challenge. Despite the risks associated with live events and unpredictable weather, the team is prepared for any scenario.
Alex Honnold gained fame for his daring free solo climbs, including the renowned ascent of El Capitan’s “Freerider” route in Yosemite National Park, featured in the Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo.” The upcoming “Skyscraper Live” event will showcase his attempt to free solo the Taipei 101, a 101-story skyscraper standing at 1,667 feet, making it the tallest building in Taiwan and the 11th tallest in the world.
Produced by Plimsoll Prods. Limited, a part of ITV Studios, the 2-hour special will be led by showrunner and executive producer Al Berman. Alongside Honnold, EPs include Grant Mansfield, James Smith, Alan Eyres, and Jonathan Retseck, with Joe DeMaio serving as director. The event promises a thrilling and adrenaline-pumping experience as Honnold takes on this monumental challenge. Stay tuned for the rescheduled “Skyscraper Live” event to witness history in the making.
