After weeks of speculation in the media about potential changes to Netflix’s talent compensation model in film and TV, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria has clarified that there are no plans for such adjustments. During her appearance at the Bloomberg Screentime conference on Thursday, Bajaria dismissed recent reports as “total fabrications” and reaffirmed Netflix’s commitment to its current payment structure.
“We are happy with our existing model for both film and TV,” Bajaria stated. “Even on the film side, where there has been much discussion, we have no intentions of altering our approach. Our model has proven successful for talent, filmmakers, and for us as a streaming platform. We have no plans to change our compensation model.”
Bajaria acknowledged that there have been a few unique agreements with talent on select film projects, where individuals expressed interest in taking on more risk in exchange for a greater share of the project’s success. However, she emphasized that these instances have been rare. “It’s a small aspect that has been blown out of proportion into this narrative of a significant shift in our business. That is simply not the case,” she clarified. “In the realm of TV, we have not engaged in any such deals. The reports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.”
When questioned about Netflix’s past statements regarding maintaining its model and subsequently making changes, such as entering the advertising industry, Bajaria acknowledged the company’s willingness to adapt to the evolving landscape. “We recognize the need to evolve with the industry and are open to making adjustments as necessary,” she explained. “We are committed to innovation and growth, rather than clinging to outdated practices. The business environment is constantly changing, and we are prepared to evolve along with it. Perhaps this willingness to adapt is what leads to inaccurate narratives being spun. In reality, there is no substance to these stories.”
