The highly anticipated “Unaccustomed Earth” series adaptation at Netflix has just announced the addition of three new series regulars, according to an exclusive report by Variety.
Indraneil Sengupta, Adi Roy, and Iyla Sundarsingh McKaig have all been cast in the adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri’s acclaimed short story collection, joining previously announced star Freida Pinto. The official synopsis for the show sets the stage for what promises to be an epic and culturally rich drama:
“Unaccustomed Earth is an epic, soapy, and culturally vibrant drama about a tight-knit Indian American community navigating love, desire, and belonging. Rich with nuance, passion, and unforgettable characters, Unaccustomed Earth invites you into the elite and insular Indian-American community of Cambridge, MA. When a star-crossed romance between a devoted wife and her long-lost love comes to light, a scandalous affair is born, and new battle lines are drawn in this intensely interconnected immigrant community.”
Sengupta, taking on the role of Jai, is recognized for his work in films like “Kahaani,” “Mishawr Rawhoshyo,” and the Indian drama series “Nimki Mukhiya.” Roy, portraying Kaushik, has made a name for himself in Broadway productions such as “Aladdin” and “Jagged Little Pill,” with this project marking his television acting debut. Sundarsingh McKaig, playing Hema, has recently appeared in the miniseries “Toxic Town” and has previous credits in shows like “Jamie Johnson” and “Emmerdale Farm.”
Roy is represented by Buchwald and Jackoway Austen Tyerman, while Sundarsingh McKaig is represented by Articulate Agency.
“Unaccustomed Earth” has been greenlit for an eight-episode run, with Madhuri Shekar at the helm as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. John Wells will serve as executive producer through John Wells Productions (JWP), with Ritesh Batra directing and executive producing the first and second episodes. Nisha Ganatra, who originally optioned the book and developed the series, will also executive produce. Lahiri will join as an executive producer, alongside Erica Saleh, Erin Jontow of JWP, and Celia Costas. Warner Bros. Television, where Wells has an overall deal, will handle production.
Fans of Lahiri’s work and newcomers alike can look forward to an immersive and captivating adaptation of “Unaccustomed Earth” coming soon to Netflix. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project.
