Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef” Review: A Live Competitive-Eating Special

Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef” is a live competitive-eating special that takes inspiration from iconic events like the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. The show, broadcast live from Las Vegas on Labor Day, featured a showdown between renowned eaters Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi. The competition, which lasted over an hour, culminated in a 10-minute battle between the two rivals, showcasing their unique styles and intense rivalry.

Joey Chestnut, known for his jaw-dropping eating abilities, expressed his love for consuming copious amounts of food. In contrast, Kobayashi, who suffered a career-threatening jaw injury in 2007, brought a sense of struggle and humanity to the contest. As the two competitors devoured hot dogs, their differences in style and approach became apparent, adding to the drama of the event.

The special highlighted Netflix’s foray into live events, aiming to captivate audiences with unique and jaw-dropping content. Despite Kobayashi’s valiant effort, Chestnut emerged victorious, consuming an astonishing 83 hot dogs compared to Kobayashi’s 66. The judges even deducted a hot dog from Kobayashi’s count due to spilled food, showcasing the meticulous nature of the competition.

The show also featured other eating challenges, including a team of Olympians who failed to outeat pro eater Matt Stonie. The contrast between different eating styles and challenges added depth to the event, showcasing the diverse world of competitive eating. Leah Shutkever even set a new Guinness World Record by devouring mass quantities of watermelon with finesse and elegance.

Netflix’s “Unfinished Beef” maintained a professional and engaging tone throughout, emphasizing the absurdity of the competitive eating world. Hosted by Rob Riggle and Nikki Garcia, the show did not shy away from the bizarre nature of the event, leaving viewers to ponder the spectacle unfolding before them. The audience was left questioning the motivations of the eaters and the enthusiastic crowd, blurring the lines between entertainment and excess.
