The Pittsburgh Penguins are known for their veteran core of players, including Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, and Kris Letang. With an average age of 37.67, this trio has been the backbone of the team for many years. While some teams focus on building around young cores, the Penguins have found success with their experienced players.

The team recently hired Dan Muse as their new head coach, replacing the two-time Stanley Cup champion Mike Sullivan. Muse, who previously served as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers, is taking on the challenge of leading a team with established leaders like Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.

Muse expressed his gratitude for having such longstanding players to lean on during this transitional period. With Crosby’s 20-year tenure and Malkin and Letang each having been with the team for 19 seasons, Muse values their experience and leadership on and off the ice.

At 42 years old, Muse is close in age to some of his key players, making for a unique dynamic within the team. Despite his relatively young age, Muse brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Penguins, having worked with both the Rangers and the Nashville Predators in the past.

Penguins’ General Manager Kyle Dubas reflected on the decision to hire Muse, emphasizing the importance of finding the right fit for the team. While Muse may not have reached the highest levels of hockey as a player, his rapid rise through the coaching ranks in the NHL speaks to his potential as a leader.

Dubas praised Muse for his ability to develop players at all levels, not just the younger ones. This holistic approach to coaching aligns with the Penguins’ goal of continuing their success with a mix of seasoned veterans and up-and-coming talent.

In a league where coaching changes can make or break a team’s season, the Penguins are placing their trust in Muse to guide them to further success. With a solid foundation of experienced players and a fresh perspective from their new head coach, the Penguins are poised to make waves in the NHL under Muse’s leadership.
