New York and New Jersey allocated around half a billion dollars to host eight World Cup matches, including the final happening today. As the event concludes, lawmakers are eager to assess whether the investment was worthwhile.
In New York City, the task of evaluating this falls to Councilmember Virginia Maloney, who chairs the chamberâs committee on economic development.
âMy priority is to ensure we recouped our costs,â Maloney stated during a Friday interview at a coffee shop in her Manhattan district, which encompasses the Upper East Side. âIâm not sure we can confidently say that yet.â
Maloney noted that the impact on hotel bookings was inconsistent; initially, reservations were low, but they seemed to improve as the matches approached. However, it remains uncertain whether this uptick was due to the World Cup or other significant events occurring in the city this summer, such as the July 4th celebrations and the Knicksâ championship victory. This necessitates an analysis to distinguish World Cup-related economic activity from what would have naturally occurred.
âItâs undeniable that bars and restaurants experienced increased activity and engagement, which translates into tangible economic benefits for New Yorkers,â Maloney observed.
She attributes this surge to various factors, including a temporary extension of operating hours for bars and restaurants signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
A report by the Queens Chamber of Commerce highlighted a 30 percent rise in business for establishments where people went to eat and drink.
âThe economic boost wasnât necessarily from attendees of the World Cup, but from people enjoying New Yorkâs summer, visiting all five boroughs to celebrate or simply be out together,â she explained.
Last summer, the host committee released a study forecasting a $3.3 billion economic impact for New York and New Jersey, with approximately $432 million expected in state and local tax revenues.
Maloney expressed concerns about the optimistic projections from FIFA and its supporters compared to the actual outcomes. A preliminary study by the host committee for the group stage alone reported $1.2 billion in direct economic impact, as noted by Bloomberg.
She sees this experience as a learning opportunity for organizing other major events in the city, such as future political conventions and a potential bid for the 2042 Olympics.
âThis should serve as a template, not as a situation where we reinvent the process every time a significant event occurs,â Maloney said.
