The city of Gotham is mourning the loss of another hero in blue, Police Officer Didarul Islam. Officer Islam was the first to be shot on Monday when a shooter, Shane Tamura, went on a rampage in a Midtown office building. Tragically, Officer Islam lost his life while trying to protect others, showcasing the selfless bravery that police officers exhibit every day.

Although off duty and working as a security guard, Officer Islam was wearing his uniform, making him a target the moment he stepped into the line of duty. His bravery and dedication to serving and protecting the public did not go unnoticed by his community. Described as a pillar of his community, Officer Islam leaves behind a wife and two children, with another on the way. He joined the police force to leave behind a legacy that his family could be proud of, and he certainly achieved that goal.

Despite Officer Islam’s heroic sacrifice, some individuals on the political left continue to smear all police officers as racist villains. Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, known for his anti-cop views, attempted to moderate his stance after Monday’s tragedy. While he expressed condolences for the victims, including Officer Islam, his past statements condemning the NYPD as racist and corrupt cannot be ignored.

Mamdani’s history of advocating for defunding the police and dismantling the NYPD raises questions about his true intentions. While he has softened his rhetoric in recent times, his proposed policies, such as disbanding the NYPD’s Strategic Response Group and redirecting funds to social workers, suggest a lack of support for law enforcement.

In the wake of Officer Islam’s death, most New Yorkers are honoring his sacrifice and recognizing the immense sacrifices that police officers make to keep the city safe. Mamdani’s half-hearted attempts to pay tribute to Officer Islam do not absolve him of his past anti-cop statements. As the city mourns the loss of a true public servant, Mamdani’s commitment to rebuilding the police force and supporting law enforcement remains in question.
