The ongoing saga between Caleb Williams and George Gervin over the “Iceman” nickname took a significant turn on Friday. The Chicago Bears quarterback admitted he was unaware of the NBA legend’s nickname when he sought the patent.
Williams discussed the issue during an appearance on “Front Office Sports News” on Friday.
Thanks for the submission!
“It’s funny, because I didn’t know,” Williams said. “My dad probably knows his nickname was that… At first, I didn’t per se like the nickname. You know, I thought there were cooler nicknames… I’ve actually earned a, a liking of the name.

“I just wanted to trademark it. I’ve trying to do that just to make sure that we can control what’s being made and put out about me using that.”

“Liar lol,” another fan said.
“Isn’t that what your lawyer is supposed to find out?” one fan said.
Here are some additional reactions.
“Meanwhile the only Iceman any of us are acknowledging is Drake’s album 😭,” a fan said.
“Then rescind the trademark application. He won’t cause he’s lying,” another fan said.
“How about he actually does something in the NFL before giving him a self proclaimed nickname,” one fan said.
The controversy began in mid-March 2026, when Caleb Williams Holding, Inc. filed four trademark applications for “Iceman,” covering apparel, athletic gear, and digital assets.
A few days later, the 73-year-old Gervin, who popularized the name in the 1970s and 80s, filed his own competing trademarks for “Iceman” and “Iceman 44.”

Caleb Williams and Skip Bayless’ argument over the Iceman nickname
The dispute between Caleb Williams and Skip Bayless began when Caleb Williams Holding, Inc. filed four trademark applications for “Iceman” on March 16. On his “Arena Gridiron” podcast, Bayless criticized Williams, expressing his disapproval of the quarterback’s attempt to claim the iconic nickname.
Williams responded on X on March 27 by posting a screenshot of the dictionary definition of steal.
“Idc about where your fandom stands. I was trying give you and everyone else the benefit of the doubt. About knowing business and being smart about it. But I guess not. Foolish of me! Also words matter Skip Bayless. ‘Steal’ Enjoy that podcast.”
The back-and-forth between the NFL player and the NBA legend continues, with both parties awaiting a decision from the relevant authorities.
