NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, at 73 years old, recently shared his admiration for the HBO Max queer hockey drama “Heated Rivalry.” In an interview with Hockey News, Bettman revealed that he binge-watched the entire first season in one sitting and described it as “a wonderful story.”

Bettman acknowledged that the content of the show, especially for a younger audience, may be considered bold, but emphasized the importance of embracing diversity and different storylines in the entertainment industry. He praised the compelling storyline of “Heated Rivalry” and found it entertaining to see references to past events in the hockey world, such as the All-Star Game in Tampa and the Sochi Olympics.

Since its debut on HBO Max in late November of 2025, “Heated Rivalry” has gained immense popularity. The show, based on Rachel Reid’s “Game Changer” book series, follows the secret romance between two rising hockey stars, Shane Hollander (played by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie). The show’s success has led to a renewal for a second season.

The stars of “Heated Rivalry,” Williams and Storrie, recently participated in the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic torch relay in Feltre, Italy. They also made an appearance at the Golden Globes, where they were escorted to the stage by two UFC fighters. Following the awards show, Williams attended Men’s Fashion Week in Milan, walking in the Dsquared2 show and attending the Giorgio Armani runway presentation.

In a podcast interview on “Shut Up Evan,” Williams reflected on the sudden fame that has come with the success of the show. He mentioned that he and Storrie have had to quickly adjust to the demands of stardom, learning what many actors experience over a span of five years in just 30 days.

“Heated Rivalry” has not only captivated audiences with its engaging storyline but has also brought attention to the importance of representation and inclusivity in the entertainment industry. As the show continues to make waves, it serves as a reminder of the power of storytelling to inspire and connect people from all walks of life.
