A highly anticipated docuseries shedding light on the life of the late hip-hop icon Nipsey Hussle is set to hit screens next year. The creators of the series have confirmed that all the necessary interviews, music, and footage have been compiled and are now in search of a network or streaming platform to release the series. Renowned director One9, known for his work on the Prime Video docuseries “Allen Iverson,” is at the helm of this project, tentatively titled “Hussle.” The series is expected to consist of five to seven episodes and will be narrated posthumously by Nipsey Hussle himself and his brother, Blacc Sam.
Nipsey Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, was a Grammy-winning artist who gained admiration for not only his music career but also his community activism, particularly his investments in Crenshaw’s commercial district. His tragic death in 2019, at the young age of 33, continues to resonate deeply in South-Central L.A. and across Southern California, where murals paying tribute to the influential artist are a common sight.
Director One9 shared insights into the extensive footage that will be featured in the docuseries, showcasing pivotal moments in Nipsey Hussle’s life. From his early days as a tech-savvy child building computers to distribute his music, to his evolution into a revered figure in the Crenshaw community, the series promises a comprehensive look at the artist’s journey. The footage includes Hussle’s first studio session at the age of 12, unreleased audio recordings, and never-before-heard music from his personal vault.
Blacc Sam, Nipsey Hussle’s brother, has played a crucial role in securing the involvement of the artist’s family in the project. The docuseries will also feature contributions from individuals close to Hussle, including Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, offering unique insights into different phases of his life.
In addition to One9, the production of “Hussle” involves Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Films, as well as LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s Springhill Entertainment. One9, who has a history of creating compelling documentaries, is committed to telling Hussle’s story with authenticity and depth.
Beyond “Hussle,” One9 has several other projects in the pipeline, including a documentary centered on photographer Markus Klinko, exploring the theme of reinvention in the creative world. With a focus on identity and disruption, One9’s storytelling approach aims to capture the essence of transformation and survival in the face of evolving landscapes.
