Andreessen Horowitz’s Twitter Account Hacked in Crypto Scam

On Wednesday, users were taken aback when they saw a crypto “airdrop” post on Andreessen Horowitz’s verified Twitter account. The post claimed that $5 million had already been given away, causing a stir among the account’s 851,000 followers. A member of a16z’s crypto team quickly recognized the fraudulent activity and warned users not to engage with the post. The tweet was promptly removed.

Typically, airdrops are used as a marketing tactic by cryptocurrencies to promote themselves. However, in this case, the airdrop promotion was a result of the account being compromised. a16z later confirmed the security breach and disassociated themselves from the fake content that was shared. The firm apologized for any confusion caused by the unauthorized individuals who accessed their account.

As a prominent investor in the crypto space, Andreessen Horowitz is no stranger to such scams. The firm’s reputation attracted jokes and cautionary messages from the crypto community, highlighting the dangers of falling for too-good-to-be-true offers. In this instance, the scam tweet promised to add value to crypto wallets but would likely have resulted in financial losses for unsuspecting users.
