The Importance of Brain Protection in the NFL

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Indianapolis Colts tight end Kylen Granson made headlines by discussing his decision to wear a Guardian Cap over his helmet during the preseason and continue doing so in the regular season. Granson emphasized the importance of protecting his brain from long-term damage, stating, “Health and safety is more important than aesthetics.”

The Guardian Cap, a soft-shell pad attached to the helmet, has been mandated by the NFL for certain position groups during practice this season. Granson, along with hundreds of other players, has embraced this additional layer of protection and believes it is a “no-brainer” to prioritize brain safety.

Granson highlighted the cumulative effects of repetitive hits on the brain, likening it to Jell-O shaking with each impact. He stressed that even minor hits can have serious consequences over time, making brain protection essential for player longevity and well-being.

The 26-year-old tight end’s decision to wear a Guardian Cap is not solely based on personal experience, as he suffered a concussion last year. Granson also referenced the tragic cases of Junior Seau and Aaron Hernandez, both of whom were diagnosed with CTE after their deaths. These sobering reminders have reinforced Granson’s commitment to prioritizing brain health.

In an Instagram video, Granson expressed his desire to inspire young athletes to prioritize safety, both on and off the field. He emphasized the importance of setting a positive example for future generations and advocated for wearing helmets during activities like biking to prevent serious injuries.

Since the introduction of Guardian Caps in 2022, the NFL has reported a 50 percent decrease in concussions among players who wear them during practice. This statistic underscores the effectiveness of additional protective measures in reducing head injuries in the league.

While some players may be hesitant to embrace the Guardian Cap due to concerns about appearance, Granson remains steadfast in his commitment to safety. He believes that the benefits of enhanced protection far outweigh any perceived drawbacks and encourages fans to support players in prioritizing their health.

As the NFL continues to prioritize player safety, initiatives like the Guardian Cap serve as important tools in reducing the risk of head injuries on the field. Granson’s advocacy for brain protection sets a positive example for his teammates and fans alike, highlighting the importance of prioritizing health and safety in professional sports.
