North Carolina dad Wellington Dickens allegedly kills his children

A tragic incident unfolded in North Carolina as a father, Wellington Delano Dickens III, was charged with the murders of his four children after he made a chilling confession to 911 operators. The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office reported that Dickens called 911 to admit to the killings, leading to his arrest at his home in Zebulon, just outside of Raleigh.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies were informed by Dickens that the bodies of his children were inside the trunk of a car in the garage. Subsequently, multiple bodies were found in the trunk of a two-door Honda sedan parked in the garage. The victims were identified as Dickens’ biological children — Leah Dickens, 6, Zoe Dickens, 9, and Wellington Dickens, 10 — along with his 18-year-old stepchild, Sean Brassfield. Thankfully, Dickens’ 3-year-old son was found alive and unharmed inside the home.

The investigation revealed that the remains had been there for an extended period, with authorities suspecting that the children had been deceased since May 1. Dickens was arraigned and charged with first-degree murder, currently held without bond at the Johnston County Jail.

Tragic events seemed to have plagued Dickens’ life, as his wife, Stephanie Rae Jones Dickens, passed away in April 2024. Her sudden death left behind five children, including the victims, who continued residing in the family home in Zebulon. The loss of Dickens’ wife followed the tragic passing of his father in a box-truck collision in Lee County about a year prior.

Family members and neighbors expressed shock and disbelief at the horrific incident, with Dickens’ great-uncle Charles Moore mentioning that the Iraq War veteran had struggled with issues since returning from service. Next-door neighbor Debra Riley and others in the community were devastated by the news, struggling to comprehend the tragedy that unfolded in their midst.

Despite the community’s efforts to support Dickens following his wife’s passing, he reportedly became more withdrawn and reclusive over time. The neighborhood, initially welcoming, was left in shock and disbelief at the gruesome discovery in the Dickens household.

Dickens is scheduled to appear in court for further proceedings, facing the possibility of a maximum sentence of life without parole or the death penalty if found guilty. The heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of such senseless acts of violence on families and communities.
