A North Carolina mother of three who disappeared more than 20 years ago has finally been found after leaving her family due to “ongoing domestic issues.” Michele Lyn Hundley Smith, then 38 years old, vanished in December 2001 after leaving her home in Eden to go Christmas shopping at a Kmart in Virginia, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Sam Page revealed that Smith told law enforcement that she left because of domestic problems at the time. Although he did not provide specific details, he did mention that there were no records of domestic incidents in the household. Page emphasized that there were no allegations of foul play in relation to her disappearance.
Smith’s disappearance prompted a large-scale search involving multiple agencies across North Carolina and Virginia, including the FBI. Despite numerous hours spent searching and following investigative leads, Smith remained missing. A missing-person flier distributed at the time described her as “endangered” and stated that she would not willingly leave her children.
After receiving a tip, authorities located Smith alive and well at an undisclosed location in North Carolina. Her family has been notified of her whereabouts. In a statement posted on Facebook, one of Smith’s children expressed a mix of emotions upon learning of her mother’s reappearance. The daughter shared her uncertainty about reestablishing a relationship with her mother but reflected on the love and bond they shared in the past.
