A 23-year-old man from North Side has been arrested on charges related to the fatal shooting of his mother’s partner that occurred during a family celebration in North Center last week.

Gabriel Medina stands accused of taking the life of his mother’s boyfriend, 53-year-old Timothy Martin, around 10:36 PM on Friday, October 17, within an apartment located in the 2800 block of North Leavitt Street.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Sheri Bennet, the incident transpired amid a birthday gathering for Medina’s mother, who had been in a relationship with Martin for approximately three months. Starting around 8 PM, guests convened outside to sing “Happy Birthday” before moving indoors, where Martin had set up DJ equipment and played music while the guests danced, Bennet explained.

CWBChicago was founded in 2013 by a group of five residents from Wrigleyville and Boystown who were disappointed with the unreliable information shared at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings.

Since then, our coverage area has grown to encompass Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other neighborhoods on the North Side. Nevertheless, our mission remains steadfast: to deliver original public safety news with superior context and detail compared to mainstream media outlets.
